Results from different methods are congruent, but different approaches yield different insights. I present data from: >4000 person-days of participant observation interviews with 40 expert practitioners retrospective autoethnography of 50 critical incidents over 4 decades and experimental autoethnography of 60 events. I use eight high-risk, high-skill, real-life outdoor adventure recreation activities to provide the test circumstances. Here I compare four qualitative methodological approaches to test if, and how, thrill depends on fear. The racing community can meanwhile get on with something approaching normal life.People can speak, and this provides opportunities to analyze human emotions using perceived experiences communicated via language, as well as through measurement and imaging techniques that are also applicable to other higher animal species. The billionaires have their floating palaces, bobbing on the not-so sparkling waters of the crowded harbour, celebrities and fashionistas can shop all day while gamblers fritter away fortunes in the imposing casino. Most of those on the starting grid live, have lived or will live in Monaco at some time in their careers. Silverstone, Suzuka and Monza all have their special characteristics, particularly the thrill of racing on such fast and demanding layouts, but nowhere are the Formula One drivers more at home than slow-speed Monaco. Not only are the twisting, metal-fenced streets of the principality narrow and lined with numerous hazardous obstacles ready to trip the unwary, but they bring with them an unexpected homeliness.
